I have served on the SAPOA Board of Directors for 5 and ½ years, nearly five of those years as President. I had just a little misgiving when Betty Oppenheimer SAPOA’s President in 2000 asked me to fill an unexpired term for Alana Landree who had resigned. I knew full well of the Board’s troubled past during the late 90’s, the lawsuits, counter suits, and the mass resignations. I knew it would be a challenge, but also believed that the vast majority of Sunshine Acres residents were great people and would judge most issues on merit. Well, now almost two terms later, I’m a little less naive and a lot more appreciative of those individuals who do indeed look at the merit of issues and vote their own conscience.

Serving as SAPOA President has become more of a challenge than expected, particularly the last 12 months. Had I the foresight to match my hindsight, I would have done a few, but not many, things quite differently. Most, if not all, associated with the Mussel Beach Road. Now I’m looking ahead in anticipation of the day someone else will have the SAPOA target on his or her back.

I have become acquainted with numerous Sunshine Acres residents. I’ve made many new friends and lost a few in the process. My wife Vicki and I make a strong effort to improve SAPOA and help members in any way we can. I’m sure we have gone beyond what the bylaws, but not what being a good neighbor requires. So, if you’re going by, drop in and set a spell. We’ll whip up a cup of coffee and maybe even a muffin.

I promise we won’t record our conversation, turn you over to postal authorities, sick any of the kids on you, or sue you. The lawyer in my family is long dead, having inaugurated Abe Lincoln and served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Oh, and by the way, his brother-in-law wrote the Star Spangled Banner. God bless the U.S.A.
